Set the stage – place your candle on a stable, heat-safe surface, away from drafts and delicate items.

While Burning:

The first glow is essential – allow the wax to melt to the edges on the first burn to create a lasting, even pool.

Burn beautifully, not endlessly – limit each burn to 3–4 hours.

Stay present – never leave a burning candle unattended.

After Extinguishing:

Extinguish with grace – use a snuffer, do not blow out.

Allow to rest – let your candle cool before moving or relighting.

Keep it pure – remove any wick trimmings or debris before the next burn.

Why a 14-oz Jar Becomes a 10-oz Candle

At Brimka Haus, we choose every detail with intention — including the amount of wax in each vessel. You may notice that our Sonoma jars are rated to hold 14 ounces of liquid, yet our finished candles are filled to approximately 10 ounces. This is not a shortcut. It’s a safety standard and a quality choice.

 

Here’s why.

 

Wax weight does not equal jar volume.

The “14 oz” listed for a vessel refers to the amount of water it can hold when filled to the brim. Candle wax is lighter than water, and candle performance depends on the vessel diameter, not its total volume. A jar may hold 14 ounces of water, but that doesn’t mean it should have 14 ounces of wax.

 

Headspace protects the burn.

A properly made candle needs intentional space at the top of the vessel. This headspace:
•     Keeps the flame at a safe distance from the rim
•     Prevents overheating and glass stress
•     Allows the melt pool to form evenly
•     Reduces the risk of wax spillover
•     Supports a longer, steadier burn
Filling a Sonoma jar to 12–14 ounces would raise the melt pool too high on the glass, generate unnecessary heat, and compromise safety.

 

Wick performance is tested at a specific fill level.

Every wick is tested for:

•     Melt pool depth
•     Flame height
•     Heat distribution
•     Glass temperature
Those tests are done at a recommended fill weight, not at the jar’s maximum capacity. For Sonoma jars, the safest, most consistent performance is achieved at approximately 10 ounces of wax. That’s the level where the wick burns cleanly, the fragrance throws beautifully, and the vessel stays within safe temperature limits.

 

A better candle, not a smaller one

A 10-oz fill in a 14-oz vessel is an industry standard for wide-mouth jars. It ensures:

•     A safer burn
•     A longer burn time
•     A more even melt pool
•     A more reliable fragrance experience
